Manipur High Court directs govt to issue certificates with changed named and gender to transgender doctor

The Manipur High Court ordered all state establishments to apply the Right of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, enabling transgender individuals to update their identity in official documents.

The judgment came after a transgender woman doctor sought her educational certificates to reflect her female gender and new name, matching her Aadhaar, voter ID, and PAN card.

Justice A Guneshwar Sharma highlighted the Act’s provisions giving transgender persons the right to self-perceived gender identity and revised certificates after gender reassignment surgery.

The court directed that Sections 6 and 7 of the Act be incorporated into all existing laws and rules within Manipur, with the Chief Secretary responsible for implementation.
