Mathura Mosque Committee Urges SC to Close Centre’s Right to File Counter Affidavit Over Delay

The Shahi Masjid Eidgah Committee petitioned the Supreme Court to revoke the Centre's right to reply in ongoing cases challenging the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

The committee alleged deliberate delays by the Centre, which has failed to respond despite notices since March 2021 and a four-week extension granted in December 2024.

Managing 17 related suits in the Allahabad High Court, the mosque panel argued the Centre's inaction obstructs opposition efforts.

The Supreme Court has temporarily barred surveys and new suits regarding places of worship until the Act's validity, preserving the status as of August 15, 1947, is resolved.
