McPatel Food Sues McDonald’s Over ‘Mc’ Trademark Use

McPatel Foods Pvt. Ltd. filed a civil suit against McDonald’s Corporation in an Ahmedabad rural court, alleging unjustified threats over its use of the “McPatel” mark.

The suit, under Section 142 of the Trade Marks Act, seeks to restrain McDonald’s from initiating or threatening legal action regarding McPatel’s use of the “Mc” prefix in its branding. 

McDonald’s opposes the trademark application filed in March 2024, claiming that “McPatel” is deceptively similar to its globally recognised “Mc” trademarks and would cause confusion. 

McPatel denies these claims, asserting its mark is distinct, legally adopted, and challenges McDonald’s exclusive claim over the “Mc” prefix. The case is set for a hearing on July 28, 2025.
