Meghalaya High Court Issues Contempt Notice Over Demolition of Heritage School Building

  • Case Name: Raphael Warjri v. State of Meghalaya & Ors.

The Meghalaya High Court has issued a contempt notice to Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, for demolishing St. Anthony’s Lower Primary School, which was under review for heritage status under the Meghalaya Heritage Act, 2012.

A division bench called it a "daring challenge" to the Court’s authority. Despite an ongoing inquiry, the school proceeded with demolition.

The Court, invoking the Contempt of Courts (High Court of Meghalaya) Rules, 2013, summoned school officials on February 24, 2025, and barred further construction.

Further, the court issued an interim order prohibiting further demolition, construction, or alteration of the school building until further notice and directed local police to enforce the order strictly.
