Metro Brands Limited has obtained interim relief from the Bombay High Court in a trademark infringement case against Kerala-based MetBrands Private Limited.
The Court found the latter's mark "MetBrands" to be prima facie deceptively similar to Metro’s registered trademarks, including “METRO” and “METRO BRANDS.”
Despite prior notices, MetBrands failed to appear or respond. Metro argued the name change post-IPO was aimed at leveraging its goodwill. With 895 stores across India and ₹13,000 crore turnover, Metro’s reputation was deemed well-established.
The injunction remains until June 20 and may be made final if MetBrands remains unrepresented.
