In a late-night anti-encroachment drive, NDMC bulldozers razed awnings, signage, and shop extensions in Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar market around 11 PM, affecting around 150-200 shops.
Traders alleged the demolition occurred without prior notice, targeting even permanent structures used for shade. NDMC claimed multiple warnings were issued, and this was aimed at reclaiming public space for pedestrian access.
Market leaders Ashok Randhawa and Ashok Kalra condemned the demolition, saying even NDMC offices use similar fixtures.
The historic market, under L&DO since 1951, has faced repeated fire safety warnings. The incident has heightened tensions between shopkeepers and civic authorities, with traders now planning protests against the operation.
