The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has filed a PIL before the Supreme Court seeking the compassionate release of elderly and terminally ill convicts.
The plea emphasizes that continued incarceration of such individuals, many of whom lack access to adequate medical care, violates their rights under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution.
The PIL supports NALSA’s campaign launched on Human Rights Day 2024 under the guidance of Justice B.R. Gavai, Executive Chairman of NALSA.
The petition, filed through Advocate Rashmi Nandakumar, urges reforms to ensure the dignified treatment and rehabilitation of aging and ailing prisoners across the country.
