NALSA Report Highlights Deficiencies in Prison Legal Aid Clinics

The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has released an evaluation report on Prison Legal Aid Clinics (PLACs), identifying key gaps in legal assistance for prisoners.

The report points to inconsistent monitoring, lack of legal representation, and delays in processing legal aid applications.

Only 72% of Jail Visiting Lawyers (JVLs) received training, while legal awareness initiatives scored 65.39% in effectiveness.

The Supreme Court has directed improved monitoring, timely legal aid processing, and regular training for PLAC functionaries.

The report calls for urgent reforms to enhance access to justice for prisoners and ensure more effective legal aid implementation.
