“Nepotism Anathema to Democracy”: Supreme Court Cancels Deluxe Flat Allotments to Haryana Officials

The Supreme Court set aside the Punjab & Haryana High Court’s order and cancelled the allotment of two super deluxe flats made by the HUDA Employees Welfare Organization to senior Haryana officials.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and K. Vinod Chandran held that the process was marked by favouritism, self-aggrandizement, and blatant misuse of position.

One officer secured allotment despite being ineligible on the cut-off date and not depositing membership fees, while another allottee failed to meet the prescribed pay-band criteria.

Observing that “nepotism and self-aggrandizement are anathema to democracy,” the Court ruled that such opaque actions by public servants violate principles of fairness and equality.
