NGT Reserves Order in Suo Motu Case on Decline of Native Fish Species in Yamuna

The National Green Tribunal has reserved its order in a suo motu matter concerning the sharp decline of indigenous fish species and the growing presence of invasive foreign fish in the Yamuna River.

The case arose from a May 2024 news report citing a scientific survey that recorded 126 fish species along the river’s stretch.

The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Prayagraj, attributed the fall in native species to heavy pollution, disrupted river flow and damage to aquatic habitats.

The Tribunal also took note of CPCB findings indicating non-compliance with essential water quality parameters required for aquatic life and wildlife propagation.
