The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) concerning widespread violations of norms on the reuse of cooking oil by roadside vendors and food joints.
Despite awareness campaigns, the practice persists, posing serious health risks and infringing basic human rights. The NHRC has directed FSSAI to submit state-wise data and an action-taken report within two weeks.
The complaint was filed by Sarthak Samudayik Vikas Evam Jan Kalyan Sanstha, highlighting that FSSAI’s ‘Repurpose Used Cooking Oil’ campaign has largely failed to curb the reuse of degraded oil, particularly by small food businesses and street vendors.
