NHRC Seeks Report from Kerala Over Poor Prison Education Facilities

The NHRC has taken a suo motu cognizance over the inadequate infrastructure and staff shortages that are obstructing prisoners' access to education. 

It has been highlighted that, despite growing inmate interest in regular and online learning, most prisons lack secure internet, monitoring systems, dedicated devices, and Staff shortages. 

Some dangerous criminals are trying to apply for the regular course to seek interim release to facilitate travel outside the prison.

NHRC has asked the Director General of Prisons for a detailed report within four weeks, stressing the need to ensure inmates' right to education is not denied due to systemic failures.
