No Right to Free Gravy with Parotta and Beef Fry: Kerala Consumer Forum

  • Case Name: Shibu S Vayalakath v Manager, The Persian Table Restaurant & ors

The District Consumer Court, Ernakulam, has held that a restaurant is not legally or contractually bound to serve free gravy with beef fry and parotta.

Dismissing a complaint filed by a journalist against The Persian Table for mental agony, the forum ruled that the absence of complimentary gravy does not constitute a deficiency in service under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The forum held that the restaurant neither promised nor charged for gravy, and internal policies do not establish enforceable consumer rights.

Citing Section 2(11) of the Act, the court found no breach of service obligations and rejected the claim, stating no consumer relationship was violated by the absence of complimentary gravy.
