NSO Group Held Responsible for WhatsApp Spyware Case

NSO Group Held Responsible for WhatsApp Spyware Case

  • Case Name: WhatsApp Inc vs NSO group Ltd
  • Judge(s): Judge Phyllis Hamilton

A US court ruled that Israel's NSO Group is liable for hacking WhatsApp to deploy Pegasus spyware.

This ruling stemmed in 2019, when WhatsApp sued NSO for using its servers without permission to put Pegasus spyware on about 1,400 devices, including those of journalists and activists.

This decision could make spyware companies more responsible for their actions.

In India, where Pegasus was used to spy on over 300 individuals, this ruling might lead to more calls for better rules on spying.

The case will now proceed to trial for damages in March 2025.
