OpenAI Tells India Court ChatGPT Data Removal Will Breach US Legal Obligations

OpenAI informed the Delhi High Court that deleting ANI's content used for training ChatGPT would breach its U.S. legal obligations to preserve data during litigation.

ANI filed a lawsuit alleging copyright violations, seeking deletion of its content and accusing OpenAI of unfair competition due to partnerships with other media.

OpenAI claims Indian courts lack jurisdiction as it has no presence in India and denies allegations of misuse, citing fair use of publicly available data.

OpenAI stopped using ANI’s content but resisted deletion requests, emphasising its U.S.based data preservation requirements.

The case will be heard on January 28.
