Parliament Passes Bills of Lading Act, 2025 to Modernize 169-Year-Old Shipping Law

Parliament has passed the Bills of Lading Act, 2025, replacing the outdated Indian Bills of Lading Act of 1856 to streamline and modernise shipping documentation laws.

The Rajya Sabha cleared the Bill on Monday, following its earlier passage in the Lok Sabha.

The new law simplifies legal language, clarifies the rights and liabilities of parties involved in shipping, and aligns Indian shipping laws with global practices. While the core principles of issuer-holder rights remain intact, the updated framework improves legal clarity and efficiency in maritime trade.

The Bill now awaits Presidential assent to become law.
