PCOS Rebranded as PMOS: Why the Name Change Matters for Millions?

Following a 14-year global effort, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has been officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

Announced at the European Congress of Endocrinology, this change addresses long-standing inaccuracies. Experts, including Professor Helena Teede, argue the old name was misleading, as it focused on ovarian "cysts" that are actually immature follicles.

This misclassification often caused diagnostic delays for the 70% of women who remain undiagnosed worldwide.

By emphasizing the condition's complex endocrine and metabolic nature rather than just ovarian appearance, the new terminology aims to improve clinical understanding, reduce patient confusion, and ensure comprehensive treatment for this multifaceted hormonal disorder.
