Punjab & Haryana HC Dissolves Marriage After 31 Years of Separation

The Punjab & Haryana High Court has dissolved the marriage of a couple who lived separately for 31 years, citing irretrievable breakdown and mental cruelty.

The Court said, this cannot be stretched to compel the continuation of a relationship that had become wholly unworkable and devoid of substance.  

Thus, it allowed the appeal and set aside the family court judgment. It also granted the wife the liberty to approach the family court for permanent alimony.

The ruling offers closure to parties trapped in broken marriages for decades.
