PhonePe Challenges Karnataka Police Notice Seeking User Data in High Court

PhonePe has appealed before a Division Bench challenging a single-judge’s April 29 order that upheld a police notice issued under Section 91 CrPC.

The company contended that as a UPI intermediary, it is protected under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act and the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, and cannot be compelled to disclose broad user and merchant data through a police notice. 

The Division Bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Poonacha has issued notice and listed the matter for February 12,2026.
