Supreme Court Receives PIL to Control Misuse of AI Tools

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court by Advocate Aarati Sah seeking regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to prevent misuse of deepfake technology.

The petition urges the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Telecommunications to implement a licensing and regulatory framework for AI systems capable of generating synthetic videos, images, and voice impersonations.

The plea highlights the threats posed to privacy, reputation, and national security by unregulated AI use.

The plea also calls for time-bound removal of such content from online platforms. The Court directed the authorities to respond, noting that the issue warrants serious consideration.
