Supreme Court: Political Parties Must Uphold Fraternity and Constitutional Morality

The Supreme Court of India orally observed that political parties must foster fraternity in the country and adhere to constitutional morality while contesting elections.

The Bench was hearing a writ petition seeking guidelines to curb “constitutionally unbecoming” speeches by constitutional functionaries. The plea followed controversial remarks allegedly made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Court noted that democracy demands mutual respect and ideological debate without personal or communal attacks. It suggested that the petition be reframed to address broader constitutional principles rather than targeting individuals.

The Court emphasized that political leaders must ultimately foster fraternity, while the Bench expressed readiness to examine the issue upon a properly drafted petition.
