The Supreme Court permitted the filing of an amended petition by Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of Ladakh-based environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act, 1980.
The petition alleges that the detention order, issued by the Ladakh administration, was a misuse of preventive detention powers intended to suppress dissent, and seeks the quashing of the order and Wangchuk’s immediate release from custody.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the Union Government and directed that the matter be listed for further hearing, observing that the case raises significant questions concerning the exercise of preventive detention powers.
