Court upholds Judge’s Compulsory Retirement over Corrupt Property Acquisitions

  • Case Name: Ved Pal Gupta v. High Court of Punjab and Haryana & Anr.
  • Judge(s): Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetarpal
  • Advocate(s): Gurminder Singh, Jatinder Singh Gill

In 2020, the Punjab and Haryana High Court recommended the compulsory retirement of District Judge Ved Pal Gupta for acquiring properties through alleged corruption.

Gupta, who joined in 1987 with minimal assets, later accumulated properties in Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Panchkula via relatives. He challenged the decision in 2021.

The inquiry found Gupta’s mother-in-law bought a property in 1998, later bequeathed to his wife without proof of sufficient income. He also failed to justify the financial means for other acquisitions.

The Court upheld the compulsory retirement decision, ruling that administrative approval does not shield actions from scrutiny under the Employees Conduct Rules, 1965.
