Punjab & Haryana HC Seeks Rules on Uploading of Videos or Photographs Captured by Police Officials

  • Case Name: Prakash Singh Marwah v. Union of India

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed the Chandigarh DGP to frame guidelines within three months regulating the uploading of videos or photographs captured by police officials during their official duties on social media platforms.

The order came in response to a plea by advocate Prakash Singh Marwah, who claimed his rights under Article 21 were violated after a video of his altercation with traffic police went viral.

Justice Kuldeep Tiwari emphasized the need for such guidelines to prevent prejudice against investigating agencies, victims, or the accused.

An inquiry to identify who uploaded the video has been initiated, and the court has requested social media platforms to remove the content, with several URLs already taken down.
