“Relax, Pay Maintenance and be Happy”: Supreme Court Refuses Divorce to 54-Year-Old Man

The Supreme Court refused to grant divorce to a 54-year-old man who had been living separately from his wife for 16 years and paying ₹15,000 per month as maintenance.

The Court observed that the amount was not excessive and asked the man to propose a reasonable figure for permanent alimony if he wanted divorce to be considered.

When he expressed difficulty in paying, the Court remarked that ₹15,000 was minimal and advised him to “relax, keep paying, and be happy.”

The Court also noted that the wife was willing to resume cohabitation and posted the matter for further hearing.
