SC Issues Interim Directions to Tackle Student Suicides & Protect Welfare in Higher Education Institutions

The Supreme Court, expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of student suicides in higher educational institutions, has issued interim directions to safeguard student welfare and mental health.

The Court mandated that all HEIs must immediately report any case of student suicide or unnatural death, irrespective of where it occurs, including hostels, PG accommodations, or online learners.

Emphasising access to education and dignity, the Court directed that no student shall be barred from attending classes, appearing in examinations, removed from hostels, or have degrees withheld due to delays in scholarship disbursal.

Institutions were warned that non-compliance would invite strict action.
