H B Karibasamma, 85, a retired teacher, is set to become Karnataka’s first beneficiary of the right to die with dignity after years of advocacy.
Despite battling a slipped disc for decades and a recent cancer diagnosis, she spent 24 years fighting for this right, writing to top officials and the Supreme Court.
Karnataka’s recent circular allows terminally ill patients on life support to forgo treatment.
She also donated ₹6 lakh to BSF welfare, believing many terminally ill patients deserve a dignified death.
Though the Supreme Court legalised passive euthanasia in 2018, it is only now that Karnataka has decided to implement the right to die with dignity.
