Delhi Police Urges Supreme Court Not to Rely on Co-Accused Bail Orders in Riots Case

The Delhi Police opposed the bail pleas of six accused in the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots, submitting before the Supreme Court that reliance on bail orders granted to co-accused was unwarranted.

The Solicitor General argued that the violence was not limited to protests against the CAA but constituted an organised attempt to divide communities, and contended that the accused contributed to delays in the trial.

Separately, the Delhi High Court instructed the police to update on the progress of various riot-related investigations, noting that petitions seeking FIRs, including for alleged hate speech, had been pending for six years despite the availability of alternative remedies.
