Supreme Court Backs Election Commissions Power to Decide Voter List Entries Including Additions & Deletions

The Supreme Court, in a hearing, clarified that the Election Commission of India (ECI) holds the authority to include or exclude individual citizens or non-citizens from electoral rolls under its constitutional mandate.

The Court supported the ECI’s position that Aadhaar is not conclusive proof of citizenship and that Bihar residents generally possess the documentation the ECI seeks for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Addressing fears of wrongful deletions, the ECI assured that no voter would be removed without prior notice, a hearing, and a reasoned order.
