The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Bar Council of India (BCI) on a contempt plea alleging that Bar Councils continue to overcharge enrolment fees despite the landmark Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India ruling.
The petitioner claimed that State Bar Councils are still demanding amounts exceeding the statutory cap under Section 24(1)(f) of the Advocates Act, ₹750 for the general category and ₹150 for SC/ST candidates.
While the Court declined to issue notice immediately, it has sought a response from the Bar Council of India on compliance and requested personal assistance on August 8 from its Chairman, Mr. Manan Mishra.
