The Supreme Court has clarified that there is no legal barrier to increasing the retirement age of district judges in Madhya Pradesh from 60 to 61.
Hearing a plea by the MP Judges’ Association, a bench led by CJI BR Gavai directed the Madhya Pradesh High Court to take an administrative decision within three months.
The Court relied on a prior ruling in the All India Judges Association case related to Telangana, stating similar age enhancement was permissible.
The petitioners had initially sought parity with officials retiring at 62, but later limited the request to 61.
