Supreme Court Declines Plea to Suspend ‘Umeed Portal’, Says Issue Covered in Reserved Judgment

The Supreme Court refused urgent listing of an application seeking suspension of the Union Government’s ‘Umeed Portal’ for online registration of waqfs, including waqfs-by-user.

Chief Justice BR Gavai orally observed that registration could proceed and clarified that the issue would be considered in the reserved judgment on pleas challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Petitioners argued that waqfs-by-user cannot comply with the new registration mandate and sought interim relief.

The Court, however, reiterated that the matter is reserved. Several provisions of the Amendment Act, including restrictions on waqfs and structural changes in Waqf Boards, remain under challenge.
