The Supreme Court has summoned the Center and the Election Commission to address Jairam Ramesh's dispute regarding the transformation made to the Rule 93 Conduct of Election Rules, 1961.
The changes will limit public access to electronic election records like CCTV footage and webcasts, aiming to prevent misuse but have raised transparency concerns.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi critiqued the amendments arguing they lessen the accountability on the part of the officials. These changes were made following an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court allowing access to some election records and on the recommendation of the ECI.
Ramesh argues that this violates the fundamental right to free and fair elections by blocking vital information from the public.
