Supreme Court Directs Centre to Frame Rules for Consumer Forum Appointments with Fixed Tenure

The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to notify fresh Rules governing the selection and appointment of judicial and non-judicial members to consumer forums within four months.

The Court emphasized that these Rules must include a fixed five-year tenure for such appointments and ensure a judiciary-majority Selection Committee, with two judicial members, including the Chairperson.

The court further held that no written exam is needed for judicial members and Presidents, while non-judicial members must undergo a written test and viva.

The Centre must also file an affidavit on creating a permanent consumer tribunal. States must complete recruitments within four months of the Rules' notification.
