SC Directs Construction of Toilets for Women, Disabled, and Transgender Persons in Courts

  • Case Name: Rajeeb Kalita v UOI & Ors.
  • Judge(s): Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan

The Supreme Court, on January 15, instructed that toilets be constructed and maintained in court premises across the country for women, persons with disabilities, and transgender individuals.

The bench directed state governments and Union Territories to allocate necessary funds and conduct regular reviews in collaboration with High Court committees.

Within four months, status reports are to be submitted. The court emphasized the absence of facilities even for female judicial officers and cautioned that failure to comply could result in contempt proceedings.

The ruling requires the establishment of separate toilets, proper maintenance, and the installation of sanitary napkin dispensers in women's restrooms.
