SC Directs Union to Address Salary Disparities in Consumer Commissions

  • Case Name: Re Pay Allowance of the Members of The UP SCDRC
  • Judge(s): Justice Abhay Oka, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan
  • Advocate(s): Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan

The Supreme Court directed the Union of India to act on suggestions for minimum salaries, annual increments, and arrears for Presidents and Members of State and District Consumer Commissions.

Amicus Curiae Gopal Sankaranarayanan proposed amendments to the 2020 Model Rules, including a minimum salary equal to the last pay drawn, 3% annual increments, and arrears from August 18, 2018.

The matter originated from a series of pleas seeking salary parity between the members of State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions and District Judges.

Justice Abhay Oka emphasized proper pay to attract competent members and ensure the objectives of the Consumer Protection Act are met.

The Court set March 5, 2025, for further hearing.
