In a first-of-its-kind move, the Supreme Court summoned Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) from all booths in the Sarpanch election of Buana Lakhu village, Panipat (held on November 2, 2022) and directed a full recount at its premises.
Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and N.K. Singh appointed the Registrar of the Court to conduct the recount on August 6, 2025, with the process fully videographed and witnessed by both parties.
The fresh tally showed Mohit Kumar at 1,051 votes and Kuldeep Singh at 1,000.
The Court overturned the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s prior order and declared Mohit Kumar the duly elected Sarpanch, directing the Panipat authorities to notify the result promptly.
