The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with a Punjab and Haryana High Court order that dismissed a PIL seeking to make the Karwa Chauth festival compulsory for all women, including widows, divorcees, and those in live-in relationships.
The court termed the petition "frivolous" and "motivated", noting that no legal basis supported the demand. Justice Vikram Nath observed that such pleas often come from actors “who don’t come forward.”
Imposing a token cost of ₹1,000, the Court warned of exemplary penalties for similar future cases and dismissed the petition without granting permission to refile.
