Supreme Court Examines Delay in Framing Charges in More than 13,600 Cases

A report placed before the Supreme Court has revealed that more than 13,600 criminal cases across India remain stuck at the pre-trial stage for over six months without charges being framed.

The data was submitted in connection with the Court’s examination of delays in criminal trials and prolonged incarceration of undertrial prisoners.

The report highlighted significant delays between filing of charge sheets and framing of charges in several States.

The Supreme Court expressed concern over the situation and indicated that broader directions may be required to address systemic delays affecting speedy trial rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.
