Supreme Court Urges Centre to Use JAG Officers for Evicting Encroachments on Defence Land

The Supreme Court has suggested that the Centre consider deploying Judge Advocate General (JAG) officers to evict encroachments on defence land instead of relying solely on state officials.

While hearing a PIL by NGO Common Cause, the Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi flagged over 2,000 acres of defence land as encroached and another 1,500 acres under unauthorised occupation

Highlighting gaps in land mutation records, the Court called mutation in state revenue records “most important.” Justice Kant also flagged misuse of prime cantonment land by “very affluent persons,” calling for tighter oversight and swift remedial action.
