Supreme Court Grants Anticipatory Bail In Case Over Misquoted Political Remark

The Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail in a case concerning a social media post that allegedly misquoted a political leader’s parliamentary remark characterising Hindus as “violent.”

The applicant faced proceedings under offences related to creating public mischief and promoting disharmony.

The Court set aside the Telangana High Court’s refusal of pre-arrest bail, holding that the filing of the chargesheet eliminated the need for custodial interrogation and that continued detention would serve no investigative purpose.

The Court directed full cooperation with the investigation and prohibited any attempt to influence witnesses, cautioning that any violation would justify cancellation of bail.
