The Supreme Court considered a PIL seeking the replacement of the current 5-year integrated LL.B course with a 4-year program, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that promotes four-year professional degrees.
Filed by Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, the petition argues that the 5-year course imposes undue financial burdens on students, especially from middle and lower-income families, and delays their entry into the legal profession.
It also calls for the establishment of a Legal Education Commission to review the syllabus, curriculum, and duration of LL.B. and LL.M. courses
While no notice was issued, the plea was tagged with a pending case on the one-year LL.M. program.
