SC directed Rajasthan to grant sacred groves(Orans) as “forests” under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980 and protect them as community reserves under Section 36-C of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The bench observed groves as having ecological, cultural, and spiritual significance for biodiversity. The court ordered the MoEFCC to frame comprehensive guidelines and formed a five-member committee to recommend including desert ecosystems and mapping of Orans. Traditional communities protecting Orans will have them designated as ‘community forest resources’ under Section 2(a) of the Forest Rights Act, 2006.
SC highlighted the Piplantri model, where 111 trees are planted for every girl born for its community-driven conservation efforts. The case will be reviewed in January 2025 for further progress.
