Supreme Court Issues Notice to ECI on Plea for Biometric and Facial Recognition of Voters

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding a PIL seeking biometric and facial recognition for voter identification.

A Bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi agreed to examine the proposal filed by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay.

While initially hesitant, the Court noted that such a transition would require significant rule changes and pose a substantial financial burden on the exchequer.

The Bench clarified that these measures would not apply to ongoing elections but may be considered for future parliamentary or state polls.
