SC Lays Down 8 Factors for Deciding Alimony Amid Bengaluru Techie Case

The Supreme Court has laid down eight factors to determine permanent alimony in divorce cases, amid the suicide of a Bengaluru techie who accused his wife and in-laws of harassment.

The case addresses alimony guidelines under the Hindu Marriage Act.

The eight factors include social and financial status, family needs, qualifications and employment, assets, standard of living, family sacrifices, litigation costs for a non-working wife, and the husband's financial capacity.

The Court emphasized that these factors are guidelines, not a strict formula, aiming to ensure a decent standard of living for the wife while preventing misuse of marital laws, citing Kiran Jyot Maini v Anish Pramod Patel.
