The Supreme Court has ordered the acquittal of two men, one of whom was on death row, in a case concerning the rape and murder of a 7-year-old.
The decision was based on the ground that the prosecution had failed to establish an unbroken chain of events in a case of circumstantial evidence, which led to such an acquittal.
The Court held that two possible views emerged from the evidence presented: one pointing to the innocence and the other to the guilt of the accused. Hence, it was bound to accept the one in favour of the accused.
