Supreme Court Directs EC to Allow Aadhaar as Proof for Voter List Inclusion in Bihar

The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to accept Aadhaar cards as valid proof of identity for inclusion in the revised voters’ list under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar.

The bench clarified that Aadhaar serves only as proof of residence, not of citizenship.

With this, Aadhaar becomes the 12th document eligible for voter enrollment. However, the Court emphasised that its authenticity must be verified during scrutiny.

The inclusion of Aadhaar could benefit over 34 lakh voters in Bihar whose names were at risk of exclusion
