Supreme Court Reserves Treasurer Post, 30% Executive Posts for Women in Gujarat Bar Associations

The Supreme Court has directed that the post of Treasurer and 30% of Executive Committee seats in the Gujarat High Court and District Bar Associations be reserved for women advocates.

The Court relied on precedents from the SC Bar Association, Delhi HC Bar Association, and Advocates' Association Bengaluru, where similar gender-based reservations were implemented.

A plea sought a 33% reservation for women lawyers in elections of the Bar Association as well as the Bar Council of Gujarat in line with the SC Judgment in Supreme Court Bar Association v. BD Kaushik.

The Court also stated it will consider the matter for all State Bar Councils and the Bar Council of India at a later stage.
