The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Bar Council of India (BCI) on a PIL challenging the ₹3,500 fee levied for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE).
The petitioner argued that the fee structure is arbitrary and burdensome, violating principles laid down in Gaurav Kumar v. Union of India, where enrolment fees were capped.
The Court earlier declined to entertain the plea, advising the petitioner to first approach the BCI.
After receiving no response, the petitioner returned to the Court. The court has now issued notice to the BCI, seeking its stand on the matter. The matter is listed next on July 15.
