Supreme Court Seeks Govt’s Reply After Rape Convict Jailed Extra Years Beyond Sentence Time

The Supreme Court has directed the Madhya Pradesh Government to explain why a rape convict spent over eight years in prison despite his sentence being reduced to seven years.

Sohan Singh @ Bablu was convicted in 2004 under Sections 376(1), 450, and 506B of the IPC and sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 2007, the Madhya Pradesh High Court modified the sentence to seven years, but he was released only in June 2025, after serving an additional eight years. Calling it a “serious lapse,” a bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan has sought a reply within two weeks.
